SUCAP announces grocery shopping lifeline

Service to start Monday, June 16

Southern Ute Community Action Programs (SUCAP) is announcing the start of a new but temporary public transit service connecting the Ignacio are with the Grocery Store in Bayfield in response to the pending shutdown of the Ignacio Shur Valu grocery store on Monday, June 16th, 2014. SUCAP will continue its current Ignacio-Durango bus schedule. Clayton Richter, Division Director for SUCAP’s Road Runner Transportation Program Division says, “Some people already use Road Runner to grocery shop in Durango. This offers them a shorter trip on the east side of the county.” The Ignacio Senior Center, also a SUCAP program division, will add one trip per week of assisted shopping for persons with disabilities and the elderly. The Senior Center will continue its weekly assisted grocery shopping trip to Durango from Ignacio.

Road Runner Transit service, Ignacio/Bayfield

Road Runner Transit will operate curb-to-curb services, three runs per week, leaving in the late morning and allowing for one hour of shopping in Bayfield. The schedule of Road Runner Transit Ignacio-Bayfield services is shown below.

Punch passes with discounts are available, and Road Runner monthly passes will be honored. Persons needing a ride to get the Ignacio Library or Senior Center are asked to schedule a ride with Ignacio Area Dial-a-Ride in time to connect with the 11:30 AM departure by calling 799-6201.

Senior Assisted or escorted transportation services

The Ignacio Senior Center will offer assisted or escorted transportation services for persons with disabilities and the elderly. This service provides assistance, security for persons boarding and leaving the vehicle, and help loading and unloading groceries. The Ignacio Senior Center will continue its Monday assisted trips to Walmart and will add one assisted trip per week to the Bayfield grocery store. The schedule, starting Monday, is shown below.

The assisted trips operated by the Ignacio Senior Center have a maximum capacity of six persons per trip, so riders are asked to call at least the day before the trip to schedule a seat.

Road Runner’s schedule is posted on its web site at www.sucap.org.
